First of all, I’m not sure what this map accomplishes other than listing cultures and where they are on a map all the while pairing that with an interesting graphic. Second of all, the Americas are grouped partly by language group, rather than culture group, and a number of Native American language-culture groups are placed in the wrong region, like the Kwakiutl and Lummi, which both appear wrongly in the Plateau-Basin (and are listed a second time in the correct place) or the Salish and Tsimshian who are listed in the “Uto-Aztecan” region (incorrectly named since that’s not a region but a language family) in the Southwest, when those groups actually belong to the Pacific NW. Quechua would be better placed in “Myths of the Andes”; Teotihuacan is not a culture but a city; ‘Abrahamic’ is listed as a culture (it’s not, but it does describe Jewish, Christian, and Islamic beliefs, which are separately listed); “Persian mythology” doesn’t say anything about Persia, with the exception of ancient Zoroastrianism, and Islam is listed as a Persian myth rather than in “Arabian/Semite Myth”; “Gypsy” is listed as “Slavic Myth” when most Roma gypsies live in the Balkans and are, in fact, not at all related to the Slavs but retain mythology from their roots in northern India; etc. In short, this could have been much better done, but it’s really just a list of not-well-thought-out lists of cultures in their associated regions.This is what happens when people try to show how Universal and understanding of humanity they are, without actually being understanding or well-researched. It’s stuff like this that makes getting an anthropology degree seem a tad hokey at times.
